World Summit

The Regional Coordinator of the CIP, Mario Ahumada, stressed the importance of the participation of civil society: is the only way that the agreements reached in these decision-making bodies should be based on the specific needs of civil society and, therefore, can transform into solutions that address the issue of hunger and poverty in the world, especially in Latin America. Also says that the Regional Representative the FAO for Latin America and the Caribbean, Jose Graziano da Silva, assessed the support of social organizations and movements to achieve a consensus that promotes agriculture and world food security. Consensus that seeks the World Summit should be considered a new food governance, increased public and private investments in agriculture in the developing countries, the strengthening of local institutions and international and environmentally sustainable agricultural production, among other fundamental issues, added the representative. FAO has opened the debate on the final declaration that will be signed in November by the heads of State and Government participants at the World Summit through a document that presents the main topics that will be discussed at the meeting already. As noted by the Director-General of FAO, Jacques Diouf, is expected that FAO proposal will lead to a fruitful discussion involving not only Governments, but also to the private sector, farmers, organizations do not Government, the United Nations system and international organisms dedicated to development. We hope that this Summit which will be held is positive before a reality which cannot be evaded and are present already has declared that the World Food Summit Plan of action builds on the consensus reached in these forums and commitment is based on the conviction that, although the world is faced with serious situations of food insecurityThere are solutions to these problems. If constant and determined efforts being made by all stakeholders at the local, national, regional and international level, the general objective of ensuring the availability at all times of food for all can be achieved. The World Food Summit Plan of action is in conformity with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, and aims to consolidate the results of other the United Nations conferences held since 1990 on topics that influence food security. Strengthening norms and mechanisms in place in the international and regional organizations to find, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, the prevention and settlement of conflicts that cause food insecurity or exacerbate it, as well as for the settlement of disputes by peaceful means and to promote tolerance, non-violence, respect for diversity and the observance of international laws.
